Why do I walk down the candy aisle ?

January 6, 2013

As Homer Simpson would say …mmmmm chocolate … I just got home from the CVS in Kingston. Why did I walk down the candy aisle and see 75% of chocolate snowmen, cherry cordial M and M’s and Marshmallow Santa’s …of course I had to buy them … and EAT them. I want you to know,  that, even after 30+ years at SLRHS,  I still feel like a kid in a candy store and can’t believe how much I enjoy my job … because of this, I have never worked a day in my life!

Junior and Senior Prom Reminder to Parents

In order for your student to purchase a ticket to the Junior Prom or Senior Prom, the parent or guardian of the student MUST attend an informational session about social hosting laws and issues endemic to our communities. You will have two opportunities to meet this obligation. Sessions will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 and Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the high school auditorium. You can attend either of these sessions in order to meet this obligation. More details will be forthcoming, but I wanted to get the information out there as soon as possible so that families could make plans. So save one of the above dates and we’ll keep you posted on developments. Students are encouraged to attend but are not required to do so. Special thanks to all who served on this sub-committee, especially parent Dawn Walsh (dawnewalsh@yahoo.com), SADD Advisor Marlene Lopes (mlopoes@slrsd.org), and faculty representative Melissa Fontaine (mfontaine@slrsd.org). Please feel free to contact any one of us should you have questions.

Graduation Planning for the Class of 2013

This is the time of year that we begin to make final arrangements for the Commencement Exercise for the Class of 2013. Graduation will take place on June 1, 2013 at 11:00AM on Sirrico Field.

While many arrangements, such as chair rental, sound, and staging, were made a year in advance, there are numerous aspects of the ceremony that require decisions and input on the part of students and their parents.

Therefore, I invite you to be part of the Class of 2013 Graduation Planning Committee. The first meeting will take place on January 18, 2013 at 7:30 AM in the Principal’s Conference Room in the main office. Clearly, parents and guardians of members of the Class of 2013 have an immediate interest in the ceremony. However, it is very helpful to have parents and guardians of underclassmen as part of the planning process in preparation for future graduations.

The 2013 class officers represent the student body for this committee. If you are interested in serving on this ad hoc committee, please contact Judy Laniewski or Karen Cameron at the attendance kiosk at your earliest convenience; jlaniewski@slrsd.org or kcameron@slrsd.org.  If you prefer to call via phone, 781-585-3844 extension 1001.

Parent-Teacher Conferences on February 7, 2013

The final scheduled parent-teacher conferences will be held on February 7, 2013. These conferences will be by appointment. Once again we’ll be using  pick-a-time for you to sign up for appointments. Please keep an eye out for an email that will be sent out announcing the opening of the pick-a-time portal.

School Council Survey

Thanks to the over 300 families who took the time to complete the survey developed by the SLRHS School Improvement Council. If you recall, the survey was open at the end of November and beginning of December 2012. Click the link below to see the results of the survey. The School Improvement Council will continue to study the results and develop our next School Improvement Plan to reflect these opinions.  2012 School Improvement Council Survey Results. Please feel free to contact me should you have any suggestions or comments about the survey.

Safety Plan

We met with Police from all three towns last Friday as part of our monthly meetings. According to the experts, the procedures we have in place for emergency situations are well thought out, practical, solid, and appropriate. The thing is, these procedures need to be second nature to all of us, so expect more frequent unannounced practice drills throughout the course of the school year. I will always let you know when these drills occur and I will always follow-up with an email about the results.
