The Times “They are a Changin”

I hearken back to the song by Bob Dylan released in 1964, because the times are most certainly changing. We have so many ways to share information, that it can sometimes become overwhelming and confusing. Let’s try to sort things out …

Power School Parent Portal

Students, parents and guardians are able to access academic information via this parent portal. We’ve had this program for several years. The login information you used last year (including grade 8) will work again this year. However, since the school district changed servers over the summer,  the web address that you go to HAS CHANGED. If you access the parent portal through the high school web https://ps.slrsd.org:444/public/site you should have no issues, however, if you have the site bookmarked from last year, it will not work. Here is the link for the parent portal. . If you are new to the district and need to create an account, please follow this link http://www.slrsd.org/slrhs/information/pdf/Parent%20Portal%20PowerSchool%20Infor%20COMBINED.pdf.

You may also want to review the “primer” on the use of the parent portal here: http://www.slrsd.org/slrhs/information/pdf/Parent%20Portal%20Primer.pdf

Blackboard Connect 5

This is our community outreach program. Families can receive any combination they choose of phone calls (land line and mobile), email, and text messages. Instructions to create an account for this service can be found at the link below. Again, the information from last year, including Grade 8 students, has been rolled over. You should login to your account to make sure the data is correct. Login instructions are also found in the link below.

Twitter

I have a Twitter account with the user name   @slrhsprincipal   I honestly don’t plan to post to this account very frequently. I plan to use this for brief notices such as no school announcements, parent night reminders, upcoming events and other time sensitive events. You can get information  from this account in two ways. You can just follow @slrhsprincipal via Twitter or you can text follow @slrhsprincipal to 40404 and you will receive whatever I post as a text message.

Pick-a-Time Scheduler

We have two individual parent/teacher conferences coming up during the year. One on October 4, 2012 and the other on February 7, 2012. Thanks to parent input from Pat Killeen, we are finally entering the 21st Century when it comes to scheduling parent/teacher conferences. Coming soon to a theater near you will be a new program called Pick-a-Time. This web-based service allows you schedule your conference times from the comfort of your own home, and schedule the times that are most convenient for you. We have beta tested this with a few parents and so far we are getting positive reviews. I hope to go “live” with this by the end of this week to give parents ample time to schedule conferences for October 4, 2012. As always, please remember, that if you are unable to procure an appointment time due to a teacher’s schedule being full, you can always contact the teacher directly to make an individual appointment.

National Honor Society Drop in Tutoring

Beginning during the last week of September, Mrs. Pruyn and the Silver Lake Regional High School National Honor Society Chapter will be offering after school drop in tutoring in our library from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM. This service is open to all students and is an excellent opportunity for students to receive a bit of extra help in their subjects. The service will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays and late buses are available.

Homecoming Week

This is a very highly spirited week in the school calendar. Spirit Week begins on September 24, 2012 and culminates with the Homecoming Football game on Saturday afternoon (complete with class skits at halftime) and the Homecoming Dance on Saturday evening September 29, 2012. Tickets will go on sale the week of September 24. Student Council has organized various dress up days during the week and other spirit building activities. A Pep Rally is held on Friday afternoon with the entire school in attendance. Dress for the dance is SEMI FORMAL …that means neat and modest clothing. There is no need to purchase elaborate dresses or a Brooks Brother’s suit. The freshman class will be selling bottled water, pizza, and baked goods during the dance to keep our students nourished and hydrated. Please contact Mr. Pina at apina@slrsd.org if you have questions about Homecoming activities.
