Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer …

With all due respect to Nat King Cole …this summer has been anything but lazy or hazy. I haven’t been in school since June 15. As most of you know, I had total hip replacement surgery on June 18. Everyone I spoke with told me how quick the recovery would be … they probably were just trying to protect me. Recovery has been slow and rather painful. Not that I am complaining, but the recovery process has been longer than I anticipated. Not quite ready to drive yet and still using crutches to move around. I hope to progress to a cane by next week and then walk unaided by the end of July. Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. I’m sure I’ll be at full strength by the start of school,  August 29 for students in all grades.

Teachers report for two days of professional development on Monday August 27 and Tuesday August 28. We’ll be doing lots of work on the use of technology in instruction as well as introducing the new state teacher evaluation system.

New teachers report to school for orientation on Friday August 24. I’ll give you details about our new teachers a bit later in the summer. However I do want to update you on teachers who will not be at SLRHS for the 2012-2013 school year.

Science Department:

Mr. Kaszanek has moved to New York

Mr Cotter and Mr. Shetler have retired

English Department:

Mr. Cook is pursuing other interests

Mrs. White is on maternity leave

Culinary Arts:

Mr. Gilbert retired

Mr. Cohan has taken a position closer to his home

Practical Arts Department:

Social Studies Department:

Mr. Darche retired

Mathematics Department:

Mrs. Gould retired from her one year

As I mentioned, I’ll be giving you detailed information about our new staff members later this summer.

Freshmen and their parents, as well as students new to the school are reminded of our Orientation on Friday August 17. You should have received a letter in the mail with details of the orientation.

All students should have received their final report card for 2011-2012 and their class selections for 2012-2013 in the mail. I expect that full schedules for students will be available on August 17. Freshmen will receive their schedules as part of their orientation, and upperclassmen schedules should be available at the kiosk. feel free to contact the guidance office if you have questions or need to make changes in your schedule.

Enjoy the rest of the summer. Be safe, happy, and healthy.
