Mid-Year Exams, Graduation 2012, and Communication …

Housemaster James Mulcahy takes attendance in preparation for the Class of 2011 Commencement

This is the time of year that we begin to make final arrangements for the Commencement Exercise for the Class of 2012. Graduation will take place on June 2, 2012 at 11:00AM on Sirrico Field.

While many arrangements, such as chair rental, sound, and staging, were made a year in advance, there are numerous aspects of the ceremony that require decisions and input on the part of students and their parents.

Therefore, I invite you to be part of the Class of 2012 Graduation Planning Committee. The first meeting will take place on January 13, 2011 at 7:30 AM in the Principal’s Conference Room in the main office. Clearly, parents and guardians of members of the Class of 2012 have an immediate interest in the ceremony. However, it is very helpful to have parents and guardians of underclassmen as part of the planning process in preparation for future graduations.

The 2012 class officers represent the student body for this committee. If you are interested in serving on this ad hoc committee, please contact the Principal’s Secretary, Betty Lewis at your earliest convenience; blewis@slrsd.org or 781-585-3844 extension 1002.

Freshman Students attend their orientation day last August

Project Silver, the freshmen mentoring program here at Silver Lake, will be hosting a mid-year exam review session for all ninth graders. It will be held on January 12th from 2-3pm in the school library. Teachers representing all subject areas will be on hand to assist students as they prepare to take their first examinations in high school! Members of the National Honor Society will also be volunteering as tutors that afternoon. Freshmen are encouraged to bring their textbooks, study guides and other materials with them to this event. In addition, Project Silver recently sponsored the second installment in the Freshmen Seminar series in which students were briefed on what to expect during the exam period. For more information and to view the seminar please visit the Project Silver webpage on the school website. http://www.slrsd.org/slrhs/activities/project_silver/

The Silver Lake Regional School District, along with Union #31 will begin using a system known as Blackboard Connect to communicate with the homes of students. This highly customizable system will be used to broadcast school cancellations, emergency announcements, and pertinent information to parents and guardians. The system will be able to contact parents and guardians in a matter of minutes versus several hours as was the case before. Obviously, in an emergency situation, time is of the essence. My hope is that we never have to use this feature. Our first step will be to test the system on Monday January 9, 2012 with a phone call indicating that there is no school on January 16, 2012 to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. and there is no school for students on January 17, 2012 as this is a professional development day for all staff.  After this test and we are sure the system is operating properly, I will be disseminating information that will allow you to choose the manner in which you receive these messages. Some of the options are email, sms text message, cell phone number or any combination thereof. Keep your eye on this blog for more information.

Lost and Found is Overflowing

Sometimes,  adolescent students can be forgetful and lose things … our Lost and Found area is OVERFLOWING with clothing, shoes, backpacks, and other personal belongings. Most of these items have been in the Lost and Found since the beginning of the school year.  Please … if your student lost something at school … have them check in the Lost and Found.  Lost and Found is located in the locked  Central Storage Area across the hall from the gymnasium locker rooms.  On January 31, 2012, we will be emptying out the plethora of items and donating them to shelters in the area.
