An Eclectic Combination of SL News…

All of our Advanced Placement Classes must be approved by the College Board. The curriculum for these courses is prescribed by the College Board. The approvals must be renewed anytime there is a change in the person teaching the course. This year we had to submit approval for: AP Psychology (new course taught by Mr. Donovan), AP Calculus (new teacher now taught by Mr. Correia), and AP Physics (new teacher now taught by Mr. Shetler). We recently received word on two of the three courses. An excerpt from our notification letter follows:

The College Board is pleased to announce that your Psychology course syllabus and Calculus course syllabus are authorized to use the AP® designation for the 2011 – 2012 academic year at Silver Lake Regional High School. The College Board applauds and recognizes your efforts to provide your students with the academic rigor and college-level experience that is the promise of AP. I thank you for the time and effort you put into participating in the AP Course Audit.

We expect our notification for AP Physics within two weeks.

Although I did not see it myself, several faculty members alerted me to the fact that Silver Lake was on the early morning news on WCVB Channel 5 this past Monday morning. Our Librarian/Media Specialist, Linda Redding, filmed a Good Morning Shout Out at our Homecoming Pep Rally and submitted it to be aired on TV …guess what …they picked our school and showed us on the morning news around 5:30 AM! Here is the direct link for the school shout out as seen on WCVB Channel 5 last week.

Thank you to all those who attended our second Freshman Parent Orientation last Friday morning. As I’ve mentioned. The meeting was held due to a suggestion from the PTO and School Council. Some parents have suggested that we hold these sessions quarterly. Please let us know how you feel about this. Respond via direct email rkelley@slrsd.org, or feel free to comment on this blog.

Immediately after the freshman parent orientation, we held the first Freshman Seminar of the year as part of Project Silver. All freshmen reported to the auditorium for a seminar that helped students utilize technology in their learning. Ms. Fontaine and Mrs. Gill, Project Silver Coordinators, led the 30 minute seminar. Listed below is a link to the student produced video that was shown to members of the freshman class. After the video, several students took a “quiz” on the presentation using our new iPad2’s. Silver Lake sweatshirts and caps were presented as prizes to 10 lucky students.

Science teacher Ms. Berry, collected $350 from 67 staff members for breast cancer research. Staff made a donation of their choice to the American Cancer Society for the privilege of wearing jeans to school day on Friday October 21, 2011. Thanks to our Kiosk ladies, Mrs. Laniewski and Mrs. Cameron for collecting the donations and selling pink ribbons for those who chose not to wear jeans

The South Shore Health Youth Connection, affiliated with the South Shore Visiting Nurses Association, sent us their October Newsletter. There are several articles in the newsletter that I think will be of interest to many members of our community. Please click on the link below to read the newsletter and feel free to subscribe to their newsletter, should you see fit.
