Classroom Happenings and an Opportunity for Sophomores …

Mrs. Crowley’s Understanding Children’s Literature class and the Silver Lake Regional High School pre-school student teachers shared their original Counting and ABC Books with the preschool students on Thursday, October 6 in the Library.  Each preschooler was paired up with the students in the Children’s Lit class who enjoyed sharing their work with them.  The preschool students with their teacher Mrs. Pimental and aide Mrs. Bonney joined in, and, after the reading, everyone used the computers to explore the PBS Kids website which has educational activities.  The Children’s Literature students will soon produce their original picture books and we will plan an activity to include the preschoolers again.

Attention Sophomores

The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) is a dynamic, interactive educational program designed to prepare our country’s youth to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community.  Outstanding sophomore students who attend the 3 day seminar interact with leaders in business, government, education, media and non-profits; they get a realistic look at our nation, its people, and their role within the world community.  To find out more, visit www.hoby.org/students.

Any sophomore interested in this outstanding program must apply by submitting an essay on the topic of Leadership.  In a one page essay, please describe the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a leader in our school and community.  Please submit your essay to the guidance office or Mrs. Bates by November 10th.  The winner of the essay contest will be chosen to represent Silver Lake Regional High School at the HOBY seminar this upcoming spring at Bentley University.  For further information please see Mrs. Bates or Mr. Garofalo in the guidance office.
